The Active Release Technique (ART) does what it says in the name. It is the ‘active release’ of adhesions within muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia. These adhesions can cause contractures or tightening within these structures. When contractures and tightening happens, this can result in them becoming dysfunctional and can lead to injury and pain.

This soft tissue technique involves the act of shortening a muscle, applying pressure to that muscle, ligament, tendon or fascia in either a proximal or distal direction (depending on which part you are having treated) and then lengthening the muscle through to its full range of motion.

ART is an effective soft tissue technique which can be used when people are in either acute or chronic pain. To be effective in treatment, a practitioner must have a detailed knowledge of all the soft tissue structures.

Problems that ART can help with include:

  • Muscle strains
  • Muscle fascial tension
  • Ligament sprains
  • Peripheral nerve entrapments
  • Oedema/swelling
  • Meniscal tears
  • Shin splints
  • Achillis Tendonitis
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tennis/golfers elbow
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
